13 Best Blenders For Smoothies 2023 | Top-Reviewed Blenders

Publish date: 2024-04-18

Whether you’re trying to eat more fruit and vegetables, or you simply love a chilled drink, smoothies are a brilliant addition to your diet.

Just ask accredited practising dietitian and senior project officer at Nutrition Australia, Karen Stafford, who says using a blender can actually be better than a juicer.

“The main difference between blending and juicing at home is fibre content. A lot of juicers on the market will remove all the fibrous parts of fruits and vegetables including the skin and pulp,” she tells news.com.au.

“Compared to juicing, blending your fruits and vegetables will retain the fibrous skin and pulp, which slows down the digestion and absorption of the sugars into the bloodstream for a more sustained energy release, keeping us fuller for longer.”

And considering the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ (ABS) latest findings show only nine per cent of Australian adults get their recommended five serves of vegetables per day, it probably wouldn’t hurt to start adding smoothies to our daily menu.

“Fibre helps you feel fuller, keeps you regular and supports your gut health in a multitude of ways,” Karen says.

“Eating enough fibre can reduce your risk of depression, disease and some cancers, including bowel cancer.”

According to home cook, recipe creator and food influencer Jessica Nguyen, if you want to take your smoothie to the next level, there’s just one ingredient to include – and delightfully, it’s completely free.

“You always need at least a cup of ice so that you get a chilled smoothie (no one likes a warm smoothie),” she tells news.com.au.

So, ice aside, how can you create an irresistible smoothie? Your blender – and its features – can play a big part. If you’re bamboozled by the sheer number of options on the market, we’ve rounded up the products worth opening your wallet for including the Kambrook Blitz2Go Active Blender on sale for ony $39.

ARE BLENDERS WORTH BUYING?

It’s certainly worth buying a blender for your kitchen, especially with the wide variety of options on the market. Even the cheapest blenders can still offer plenty of convenience and versatility, allowing you to take protein shakes and green smoothies on the go as well as whip up different types of dips and sauces. Blenders also give you plenty of control over your ingredients, which is great if you need to cater to certain allergies or food intolerances, or simply want healthier alternatives to store-bought products.

“Extra serves of vegetables to your smoothies, soups and dips will help increase your intake and avoid the added salt and/or sugar commonly found in many store-bought products. Adding fruit and vegetables that may be a little past their best, and looking a little sad, into homemade smoothies, soups, dips and pancake mixes is also a great way to reduce food waste and save some extra cash,” says Karen.

WHAT FEATURES SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A SMOOTHIE BLENDER?

Taste’s Food Director and resident news.com.au checkout Food Expert Kim Coverdale lists a few of her top must-have essentials when considering which blender to buy.

Enough motor power to crush ice

It’s generally better to buy a blender that’s powerful enough to crush ice, especially when you’re planning on adding frozen fruit and nuts into your smoothie.

Glass jug or plastic jug

Plastic jugs are great if you want a lightweight and easy to clean jug. Although Kim says to keep in mind that some cheaper plastics tend to stain, scratch or split, or don’t fully remove the odours from what you’ve blended beforehand.

Alternatively, glass jugs last longer but are heavier and can chip around the edges.

Speed dial

Kim prefers blenders with a speed dial or a ‘slow start’ setting since it allows you to gradually increase the speed with greater control.

Rubber feet

Similar to washing machines and dryers, blenders can slightly move while it’s running. That’s why it’s better to opt for a unit with a rubber bottom or a solid and firm motor base to ensure the blender stays in place.

Size and functionality

Jessica recommends picking blender that can produce at least two serves in a single go for convenience. If you have a small kitchen, she also suggests finding a multifunctional model that can blend a variety of things – not just smoothies.

WHAT ARE THE BEST THINGS TO BLEND IN A SMOOTHIE?

Karen says the best smoothie recipes include a “variety of food from the core food groups” that fill us with a “range of nutrients to support our health”. This includes:

Jessica also recommends finding the “right combination of ingredients” and balance of flavours to help create a great tasting smoothie.

“For example, green smoothies can be so hit and miss depending on what you put in them, but as a general rule, I always make sure there’s a sweet fruit like banana or mango that will give you the perfect consistency, other fruits and vegetables like green apple, cucumber and celery for a hit of freshness and leafy greens like spinach and kale for colour and nutrition,” she says.

“Always add a squeeze of lemon which not only adds a bit of zing but maintains the bright green colour and prevents the smoothie from oxidising. Finally, add a little something to make it fun whether it be ginger for a bit of spice or some passionfruit for crunch.”

CAN BLENDERS BE USED FOR ANYTHING ELSE?

You bet. A smoothie blender is definitely not limited to smoothies only, making it a versatile buy. According to Jessica, it can be used for “blended cocktails, say a frozen watermelon margarita and you could use it to puree soups, sauces, blend pastes, chop ingredients down, make breadcrumbs out of stale bread – the list goes on and on”.

“Blenders are such a versatile and timesaving piece of equipment to have in the kitchen,” adds Karen.

More Coverage

“They aren’t just for smoothies – get the most out of your blender by making a range of recipes including vegetable-based dips such as spiced beetroot, sweet potato and tahini, hummus or roasted garlic and cannellini bean; luscious, silky soups or homemade nut and seed butters.
