Harry Lorayne was an author and an authority on memory exercises. Lorayne was raised in the Lower East Side of New York City and learned magic in the 1930s in Hamilton Fish Park. He started working as a table magician at Billy Reed’s Little Club on 70 East 55th Street in New York City when he was 18 years old.

Harry Lorayne made 24 appearances on The Tonight Show. Johnny Carson was a regular performer. Lorayne would show off his memory by introducing himself to each member of the club he was attending while standing next to the president. A club may have up to 1,500 participants.

After an hour and a half, Lorayne would discuss the experience for around 20 minutes before asking if anyone had any questions.

For each questioner whose name he couldn’t recollect, he made a $1,000 commitment. Everyone in the audience had names he could recall.
