Kate Winslet Talks 'Mare of Easttown' Sex Scene

Millions of Americans are experiencing a Mare of Easttown hangover of sorts. We're still reeling from the finale's final one-two gut-punch, puzzling over the loose ends (the journals!), and trying (and failing) to pull off the unexpectedly challenging Delaware County accent.

Just as we thought we'd googled our last red herring and attempted our final rounded vowel, the New York Times pulled us back in with a profile on Mare herself, Kate Winslet.

Winslet's found her character difficult to shake, too, due in part to her full immersion in the role and the Pennsylvania town Mare inhabited.

"Not only did I have to hide myself in the character completely, but I had to hide this story, carry the secret," Winslet said, explaining that she first read the scripts back in 2018. "My job was to take them on this horrendous journey and hope to God that they'd be prepared to come into the attic with me at the end," she went on. "It has been agony, agony, agony."

Glamor was off the table when it came to the grieving detective.

Winslet told the Times that she prohibited the show's director, Craig Zobel, from cutting "a bulgy bit of belly" from her sex scene with Richard Ryan (Guy Pearce). She had a similar approach to the HBO series' promotional materials, sending the show's poster back twice because it was overly retouched.

"They were like 'Kate, really, you can't,' and I'm like 'Guys, I know how many lines I have by the side of my eye, please put them all back,'" Winslet explained.

"Listen, I hope that in playing Mare as a middle-aged woman — I will be 46 in October — I guess that's why people have connected with this character in the way that they have done because there are clearly no filters," she continued. "She's a fully functioning, flawed woman with a body and a face that moves in a way that is synonymous with her age and her life and where she comes from. I think we're starved of that a bit."

Speaking of starving, we're already hungry for season 2 (and also a hoagie). Though Mare is still classified as a limited series, Winslet told TV Line she "would absolutely love" to reprise her no-nonsense character. "I miss her," she told the site. "It's the strangest thing. I feel like I'm in mourning. It was an absolutely wonderful role."
